Description

Asparaginase is a bacterial enzyme that can specifically degrade L-Asparagine into L-Aspartic acid and Ammonia. Its active form is a homologous tetramer; each subunit is composed of 326 amino acids

Application

L-Asparaginase is an enzyme isolated from E.coli and is widely used for the treatment of cancer. It hydrolyses the non-essential amino acid Asparagine into Aspartic acid and Ammonia. Cancer cells require high amounts of Asparagine for protein synthesis. Hence, the introduction of L-Asparaginase leads to a deficiency of amino acids in tumour cells and inhibits their propagation
